Espelette

I was very eager to visit Espelette while we were in French Basque country.  Espelette is a small town near the French-Spanish border that is known for growing a variety of mildly spicy red pepper, the Piment d'Espelette.  We love the flavor of the peppers, whether dried and ground into a powder or cooked, and I couldn't resist visiting their source.

Espelette was a pretty town with traditional Basque buildings covered in strings of drying peppers.  The main street through town does feel a little touristy, though as J pointed out, a touristy shopping street lined with bakeries, butcher shops, and shops filled with pepper products is pretty great.  There are several hiking paths that start and end in the center of town and we followed a short one that took us through the village and the rolling hills on the outskirts of Espelette before having lunch and heading back to Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
